When I returned, I rubbed down the King
and turned and there she was, standing there with a coffee in hand.
Lisa handed it to me with a good morning kiss and said she thought I
went off without saying good-bye. I looked at her in the eye and
told her "Good-bye means forever".
We went inside to the smell of bacon cooking. I took Lisa to one
side and told her I must go back into the bush. She said to give her
a few minutes to get some things and she would come with me for the
night.
I told Jeff I was heading back to where I met up with them. He said
that Janet and him would come out there later with a tent and camp
out for the night with me and Lisa. I told him I would pick up some
things for supper and breakfast if he picked up the whiskey. He
agreed, so Lisa, myself and King were off. Lisa took me to a grocery
store for food. I picked up a ham roast, some potatoes, a piece of
back bacon and a dozen cobs of corn.
Lisa called home and asked them to bring a big pot. When she was off
the phone Jeff pulled up, so I threw all my things in and got in his
truck and told him where Lisa was and what she was doing. That is
when he told me all Lisa did was talk about me all morning, and he
has never seen her like that over a guy before. I told him I didn't
want to hurt her, but I have to leave and be on y way soon. He said
Lisa knew that so she wanted to have a goodtime before I left. Then
he asked me why I didn't go for it with her last night. My response
was, "At the right time it will happen and at the right place". Then
I winked at him and said it won't be in a house and with a smile. He
said, "See ya there", and was off.
Some kids were around me now patting King. Some of them gave him
some apples then Lisa was back and noticed that the food I just got
wasn't with me. I told her I thought she had it…she gave me a funny
look then I told her I had seen Jeff. I tightened up the saddle,
then stepped into it and helped Lisa up behind me. Then we were on
our way. She took me a different way to our destination. It took
about five hours to get there and when we did, there was a fire
already going.
Jeff and Janet were already there and this time his truck was with
him. There was also some kids fishing. I unsaddled the horse, rubbed
him down, then joined the others. We sat around and talked till it
was time to go to sleep.
Lisa was coming on to me and so we paired off. I didn't get much
sleep that night and the next morning got up about six.
Today I planned to move on, so I said my good-byes and was on my way
with Lisa's number and address in hand. Back on the trail I stopped
four or five hours later for coffee. That is when I found the little
something Lisa had left me.
There was a letter that said how much she had enjoyed our time
together and that she wished I stopped back if I'm around that are
again. She also gave me her address where she went to school and
that she would be going back in September. She also left me a
picture of herself and a very detailed map of Canada, so I wouldn't
get lost and lose my way back to her.
I had some coffee then hi the trail again, going along at a slow
pace. Lisa had made it hard to leave, but I knew I had to make it to
where I wish to stay for the winter. There were a lot of things to
do before it got cold. I traveled for seven days at about fifteen
hours a day. I must be in Quebec now, I haven't seen anybody in the
whole time I was in no man's land. I would have to hit a town
sometime soon because I needed some new supplies. I know I have lost
weight, so I was thinking I could find a farmer along the way that
need some help for a couple of days or weeks, I would hire on. That
would give King a wee bit of a rest also.
That night when I made camp, I went over the maps. I had to see
where I was, also to see if there was any towns coming up. Off to
the south was a road, so I would head that way.
Morning came and I could see that fall was coming soon. I made some
bacon and eggs and coffee and sat and thought about what I was
doing. I made a mental note to call mom and dad next phone I came
across, just to let them now I am okay. Out here, all alone, a man
does a lot of thinking. I was just feeling sorry for myself.
I came across an old log house and stepped down from the saddle to
look around. Nobody had been there for sometime, so I opened up the
door and windows to air the place out some. It was a nice little
place with one door and two windows. The door was facing south and
the windows on the east and west walls. Outside, I looked around a
bit and found a pond about a hundred feet away. As I sat there I
could hear birds and small animals running about. There was a small
clearing across the pond where some deer and moose came to drink. I
was thinking that this place would be a good place to hold up for
the winter.
It was the middle of August, so I had lots of time to get ready for
the cold that winter brings. I rolled it over in my mind a few
times, then made my mind up that I would go in. The east coast was
where I wanted to get to before winter. I slept there that night,
then picked a trail to the east.
A few days passed since the log house when I came across a road. I
looked it up to see a gas station just up the road. I made my way
there and picked up a few things and a hot meal.
There was an old man there that I struck up a conversation with. I
told him about the way I came and where I wanted to end up. He
seemed to know the land very well and told me he had lived and
hunted this area all his life. So, off I went down the road for
about seven miles, then northeast. It was getting late in the
afternoon, so I was kinda looking for a place to camp for the night.
