The land looked so undisturbed out
there, and so then I picked the way of my travel, and once again, I
was off. I don't know exactly where I was, but I had figured I was
south of James Bay. The bush here was a lot closer together and I
found it much harder to travel; there was a lot more bugs that had a
good bite to them. I only got bit a couple of times. I keep covered
up, plus I didn't have a perfume smell to me. The soap had no smell
to it. I also haven't shaved in a month and a half. Traveling was
slow, but I was movin forward.
As I came to the top of a hill, I looked over the land to see that
in the valley ahead of me, there was about three or four miles of
dead trees still standing. To me, that meant the land before me was
swampy, so this was a good place to stay away from. I looked over to
my left, which was to the west, away from the direction, so to my
right I was to go. I couldn't see too far in that direction because
of the hills, but that was to the east, and was the direction I was
going.
I got about a mile from the top of the hill and decided to stop for
the night. I unsaddled my horse, rubbed him down, and watered him.
There was a small creek a few hundred yards off to one side. As I
was getting water for camp, I could hear a trickle of water, so off
I was to see what I would see. I came to a small lake or big pond. I
hadn't really made camp yet, so I found a small clearing for camp.
Off I went to get my horse and things. By the time I made camp, it
would be dark in a few hours. I went for a look about to get some
wood for a fire when I came across some footprints and to me it
looked like whoever it was, they were fishing. The tracks were maybe
two days old. I made my way back to camp, made a fire and put on
some water for coffee. That takes about twenty minutes, so I went to
the water and threw in a line to see what I could get, rolled a
smoke and just looked around. What was that? It sounded like a train
horn.
Just at that moment, I had a bite on my line. I landed it to see
that it was a small trout. Three or four of these babies would make
a nice supper. By the time I had what I wanted, it was going to be
dark very soon. I cleaned the three fish and put two over the flame
to cook. The bigger of the three, I fit into a forked stick and
placed it near the smoke coming from the fire. I wanted to see how
it would taste smoked. I found that I have been eating a lot of fish
and that was something I don't normally eat a lot of, but I didn't
bring a lot of meat with me, so I did with what I had. I ate dinner
in silence, then sat back, had a smoke and a few shots of my bottle.
This place seemed nice. I just may stay here for a few more days.
There was food for my horse, food for me, lots of fresh water, what
more can a man ask for? One more thing. A woman for the night to
keep a man sitting with the right side up. Again, I feel asleep with
my back to my saddle and a bottle between my legs.
I awoke, through some sticks on the coals and crawled back into my
sleeping bag, and off into a dream land I went.
When I opened my eyes I could hear someone talking. I jumped up and
made my way away from the people coming. I got behind a big green
bush and waited to see what they were doing. There were three of
them, one guy and two girls. The guy had a cooler with him and some
fishing gear. When they seen my camp the just stopped, put down
their things and looked around at my things, but not moving from the
spot they had stopped at. I stayed where I was to see what they were
going to do.
A few minutes had passed and I couldn't hear what they were saying,
so I just got up, walked out, stood there looking at them and they
were looking at me. All I had on was my pants because I jumped out
of bed so fast. I was the one who broke the ice and said, "Good
morning, would you like a coffee?", and made my way over to the fire
to put it on. I also told them my name. The guy said his name was
Jeff and his girlfriends name was Janet and the other girl was
Janet's sister, Lisa. They came to the fire and sat down. I told
them it would have to be black because I don't have any milk or
sugar and told them of my trip I have been on. They looked at me
kind of sideways, but I assured them it was something I have always
wanted to do. We sat and talked for a bit then Jeff lit up a joint
of hash, something I haven't had in a long time and it wasn't long
before he had a beer in his hand. They had told me that they came
here to go fishing. That is when I remembered about the fish I was
smoke cooking. We all had a small piece and it was alright.
