While I was in town, I stopped at a
small store just north of town and got myself a nice piece of steak
and ten cans of pork and beans. The meat was cooking slowly on the
grill I made out of some branches I had woven together. It looked
sagged but it was working. The coffee was good and the bush was my
home. Today really showed me why I really didn't like people. That
is a part of me that I am still looking for, the part inside me that
don't like to be around people. It is something I have lived with
for most of my life.
I have told my late wife that I didn't like people and my dream was
this; to take her in the same manner I was traveling now far far
into the mountains and build us a log home. It would be at the foot
of a mountain with fresh water only feet away. I would have some
livestock like some laying hens and meat hens, a cow for milk, a
bull, maybe two pigs. I would also have a good rifle and a lot of
ammo. This log house would be built by my hands. She, the wife that
is, is not with us, so this is a journey I will make on my own.
The whiskey was starting to kick in, so I put the bottle away. I was
watching King, the horse. It was quiet, then his ear went up. I knew
that something was up and there about twenty feet away was a big
raccoon. I had my compound hand bow at my feet. I kicked it up to my
hands very slowly, cocked it and aimed it, let out all of my breath
and fired it, but missed. The small arrow stuck into the trunk of a
tree. I didn't see it then, but found it in the morning. And my
raccoon was long gone.
When morning did come, it looked like it was going to rain, so I
thought to stay where I was because there was some water and lots of
wood, and I could keep dry under the evergreen trees I had all of
this kit under. I had some coffee and went to work on the rabbit
hide I had from my first kill of this trip. I wanted to make a side
pouch or purse to hang off my belt to hold some of my personal
stuff. I worked on it a seen a coon coming towards me. This time I
would get him. He walked up towards me and "bam" he got it. A few
minutes later he was dead. This would be my lunch and supper today.
I put down what I was doing and skinned and cleaned the meat and put
it to the fire to cook. I cleaned the pelt and made a bow to dry out
the pelt and to stretch it some. This pelt I had, had no purpose,
but I thought I should keep it. It will come in handy somewhere.
It was a dark day out today and the rain was coming down in sheets
now, so I lay under the tree for shelter. The rain lasted for a few
hours then stopped and the sun came out. Day turned into night and
so I sleep.
Once again morning came and I was up, had my horse saddled and was
on my way. The fire was out, so I just wanted to get going. The bush
I was traveling through was a very clean one, you could see where
some stumps are that have been cut by a chainsaw. The funny thing
was the tree was not there, just the stump.
I also came across a couple of well used paths. I was going to stop
and see if I could get me some more small game, but the day was
young, so I decided to go on. I came along a beautiful look over the
land, so today I would stop here for a shot and have a smoke. I also
had me some pork and beans for lunch.
I came across some mud with some animal tracks in it. The tracks
were hard to make out because the animal was running, so the mud was
thrown a bit. I thought I might have spooked the animal looking at
the tracks in the direction it came, and found it to be a fox track.
