I skinned and cleaned the rabbit and
then fastened it to a stick and placed it over the flame of the
fire. I sat and scrapped the pelt and kept an eye on my supper. I
stretched the pelt for it to dry, and sat to make that smoke I was
making before my kill.
I picked up some pot before I left to go on my journey. I frequently
smoke this for pain and all round entertainment. Plus, it relaxes me
and puts me at peace of mind.
I had rubbed some spices and garlic into the meat and could now
smell it cooking. I sat back and relaxed with my cup of coffee. I
must have fallen asleep because the fire was down to just a few
coals and my meat was a little well done on one side, but in all it
was cooked and I ate in the blackness that night brings. I slept
that night much better with a full stomach.
When I opened my eyes the next morning, the birds were up, the sun
was shining and in a few minutes the coffee was hot. As I had my
morning coffee, my mind went back to the life I lived before this
morning. I was basically unhappy in general. All I had was a
comfortable home, a good dog which I didn't find before I left. I
sat for some time, not in no hurry to do anything. I must go, so I
packed up and was off.
As I sat in the saddle I was thinking of where I was going. I had a
map with me of Canada and at this point I was about a hundred miles
northwest of my home town in Barrie Ont. At this point I decided to
go east and not west because I was still a wanted man in Alberta. I
looked the map over and mapped out my journey. The map I had, had a
few Hwys and towns on it and my plan was to stay away from people as
much as I could. I was going to head north up to James Bay then east
through Quebec and Northeast to Labrador.
When in the saddle, looking at the map, I helped myself to a small
bag of salted peanuts. The next town I planned to stop at was North
Bay. The way I had myself pin pointed on this map it would be two
more days till I get there, that is if I don't stop over for a day.
There is a lot of lakes now so it will take a little more time to
get around and I had all the time in the world. Time went on and I
made it t the outskirts of North Bay in the three days. I didn't
want to go right into town because not to many men ride through town
on horseback the way I looked. The few people I did see stopped and
watched me pass with a funny look on their face. I guess I did look
out of place. I must have looked like a man from the late eighteen
hundreds and this was nineteen hundred and ninety five. I didn't
stop long to get my supplies because of that.
My supplies consist of bread, some spices, some BBQ sauce, coffee,
some candy and a few small bags of peanuts. There was a liquor store
there so I went in and got a twenty sixer of Yukon Jack. I already
had a bottle of J.D. but it was half gone. I also got some potatoes
and vegetables, put it all in my sac and was off.
I needed more things, but I didn't like the way people were treating
me. They looked at me like I was some kind of bum or something and
that is not what I am for I was financially able, mentally stable
and love what I was doing. Only if they knew.
Off again, still going north, but was going to head east once I got
outside of town forty or fifty miles. I stopped at the furthest
point north that I was going to go in Ontario. East. I would travel
in the morning. That night at my camp, I went over my maps and found
that wasn't as far north as I had thought, but had to go north the
same distance I had already traveled so far.
